The most prevalent credential for educational interpreters at this time is the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) level III, requiring 80% "accuracy" in one of two linguistic varieties (ASL interpreting or transliteration of English). At this time, school systems are not required to match interpreters with scores in one skill area with Deaf students who use the same language. For example, a transliterator can be matched with a student who needs an interpreter (or vice versa) and satisfy the regulations. For the 2005-2006 school year, only approximately 41% of interpreters statewide met the mandated qualifications for their job.
