Session Information: Joseph Kigunda, a leader in Deaf education from Kenya, will describe how he helped standardize Kenyan Sign Language. He will also talk about his continuous efforts to provide services for vulnerable children and Deaf Kenyans.  Joseph will talk about his continuous journey to improve the lives of Deaf Kenyans and what work still needs to be done.  There will be a question and answer section.

Facilitators Biography:

Joseph Kigunda, alongside Jennifer Kigunda, is co-founder and co-director of the Tania Centre, and has been educating and working with the deaf and Maasai communities in Kenya for 30 years.  Joseph has worked with the Kenyan Ministry of Education to standardize Kenyan sign language and promote its use around the country.  The Kigundas also helped establish the Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf, Kenya’s first post-secondary school for deaf students.

Target Audience:  Anyone who is Deaf, works with the Deaf (Interpreters, Deaf educators, etc.), or are part of the Deaf community interested in Deaf education in developing countries; People interested in the history of signed language development in Kenya

CEUs:  VRID is an approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities.  This program is offered for .2 CEUs in the content area of professional studies and is at the beginning to intermediate knowledge level.  No partial CEUs will be awarded.  Late arrivals will not get CEUs.
