Interpreter’s Workshop Theme: Interpreting the Bible for Church

We will discuss names of people, cities, festivals and etc. in the Bible. We will discuss less popular stories in the Bible. Also, we will learn how to use similar signs with different words and how to include and appropriately use ASL idioms while interpreting during sermon. We will discuss registers, and allow the interpreter to see how the interpreter’s ability to express the emotion must be matched to the register. The ability/inability to do this may limit the Deaf community.

Presenter: Duane Martin grew up in Florence, SC. He and his wife, Dana, have 4 children and live in Waynesboro, VA where he has recently been installed as pastor of Wayne Hills Deaf Fellowship. He is a graduate of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, D.C.; National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY; Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC and Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. He has also studied through the Tri-State Deaf School of Theology.
