Training is in an online format using Zoom.

Workshop Description: Interpreting is a dynamic, two-way activity that requires us to constantly be ‘sharpening’ our tools and adding to our toolboxes. (Think about all that work you do prior to sitting for a credentialing exam. J) But past several months has created an unprecedented challenge for educational interpreters! Rather than working in active connection with students, teachers and other interpreters – most of us have been working alone - Looming and Zooming and hoping what we are doing is effective. The physical, psychological, and skill-related impacts of isolation are significant! So how are we, as isolated practitioners, managing? Join me as we unpack some of the ways the past several months may have affected us and explore ways to keep growing! We’ll tackle identifying measurable, meaningful individualized goals, practice some skill building activities that can support growth towards those goals, and share tips for overcoming barriers that can prevent goal attainment! Whether your next goal is the QAS or interpreting an AP Calculus class, this supportive, empowering workshop will equip you with a shed-full of well-sharpened tools!

Presenter Biography:  Katherine McMullen, NIC, a veteran interpreter from Lynchburg, VA, has spent the past 30 years working in various roles within the field of Deafness as a counselor, mentor, consultant, teacher, workshop facilitator, and educational as well as freelance interpreter. In 1990, she began work as a clinician within the Virginia Community Services Board system. Over the next ten years, she completed her graduate level certification at Western Oregon University in Rehabilitative Counseling with the Deaf, obtained her first VQAS III/III, served as the Southwestern VA Regional Coordinator for the Deaf, pioneered the delivery of clinical mental health/psychiatric services via video-teleconferencing in rural Southwest Virginia, and served as the chair of the Virginia Mental Health Advisory Council for the Deaf. She personally worked, through the Advisory Council, with legislators of the General Assembly to secure significant increases in budget and programming to promote improved access to mental health services for people who are Deaf, hard of hearing, or Deafblind in Virginia. Since 1999, she has been the Lead Educational Interpreter for Lynchburg City Schools, focusing on creating opportunities for children who are deaf or hard or hearing to succeed inside and outside of the mainstream classroom by fostering exceptional, highly skilled interpreting teams. Under her leadership, Lynchburg City Schools has seen a 100% graduation rate (standard and advanced diplomas) for its DPeaf and hard of hearing student population since 1999. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Professional Development with specializations in Adult Learning and Change Management. When she’s not interpreting or leading workshops, she’s playing with her grandkids, corralling her husband into more house and yard projects, or traveling!
